About DAK Cables for Brother...

DAK (Design A Knit) does have compatible cables to work with Brother Knitting Machines.  The information below comes directly from SOFTBYTES websiteYou should always check their website for the most accurate and current information.  Below is just a summary and information on the PPD and FB100 Disk Drive

Before you decide if you want to buy DAK at $500+ and then the proper cable system at an additional $400+, you should read the section Machine Pattern Systems.  It has a lot of information about how software systems work with this knitting machine line and other options available in the market at a much lower price point, as low as $30.

These items can be a little confusing and I have decided to leave the information that I had from 2011 since you can buy these cables used.  They have been highlighted in a bright pink.  Please pay attention to what you are purchasing if it is a used cable, while you can get them at a better price over new ones, as stated above, ALWAYS ask SoftByte or your Dealer for clarification if confused as what may or may not work with your machine.

All info from SOFTBYTE and this site:

               MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS

MAGNET ARM:
A Magnet Arm can be used to convert a BrotherLink USB1 to a USB5. They allow interactive knitting, even with non electric machines.  This magent is also required in order to use the Lace Tool with Brother & TOYOTA Machines.  You can read in detail about these items on this Softbyte Page:

     http://www.softbyte.co.uk/magnetarms.htm

USB to SERIAL CONVERTER:
Softbyte sells a USB to Serial converter for the following BrotherLinks and it also allowes for interactive knitting:

                                  BrotherLink 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5

In order to have technical and customer support with a serial/usb converter, you must purchase this item from them otherwise they will not help you if you get one, say from Radio Shack.  Coming from a tech environment, not quite sure why this is but you should check cost from Best Buy or Radio Shack as they may be pricey from SoftByte.  Their reasoning is that there is a voltage issue.  If you need more information I would contact them or your local dealer to explain in detail.

PPD ADAPTER:
This is an adapter, new around $35, that connects the USB or Serial BrotherLink 1 to:

       USB or Serial BrotherLink 3
USB BrotherLink 5 to USB BrotherLink 3 or visa-versa
Connects the 965 and 270 through the PPD

This link cannot allow Interactive Knitting.  The PPD is the device produced by Brother specifically for use with their knitting machines. The DesignaKnit BrotherLink 3 cable allows colour and integrated patterns created in DesignaKnit to be transferred to and from the PPD, which has a removable cartridge. Patterns may then be transferred to a compatible electronic machine via the PPD's own connecting cable (KH930, KH940, KH950i, KH965i) or directly from the pattern cartridge (KH965, KH965i, KH970 KH270).  New around $75 once sold out then only the USB will be available.

This BROTHERLINK 3 PLUS USB is the only one that supports interactive knitting including non electronic machines, the other #3 cables do not.

BROTHERLINK 4 USB

KH900, KH270, KH965, KH965i, KH970

This cable connects to the cartridge slot on the machines. It allows up and downloading but not Interactive Knitting.  Information that I have found is confusing so I would call and ask a dealer about this.  It seems that DAK does download to this but can be used as a replacement for a PPD cartridge.  It seems that you can download files from DAK to the PPD using a BrotherLink 3.

The FB100 Disk Drive

This cable connects to the Brother FB100 disk drive and allows you to upload pattern from Brother-formatted floppy disks and format and download patterns to a disk readable on the FB100, new around $160.
It's purpose is to allow your Personal Computer's diskette drive to function just like a FB100. You do not need to own DesignaKnit to use this product. It does, however, have the ability to export a Brother format file to DesignaKnit for those who own DAK.  It also:

  - Converts Non-Brother Files From Other Systems
  - Backup: you don't have to worry anymore about the fact that your diskettes might fail.
  - View and Organize Files: You can view ALL of your patterns on your PC in color or black and white in either of two format
  - Several File Print Out Options: Choose to print out files in either color or black and white
  - Make copies
  - Diskette Failures: If an original diskette develops a defect, create a new diskette with the stored contents on your PC
  - Format Diskettes Using Brother Format

BROTHERLINK 6 PPD CABLE for DAK
BrotherLink 6 USB PPD Cable and Interactive Knitting

CARTRIDGE, SOFTWARE & CABLE

The Super Cartridge and Utility Software is a stand alone system that is not dependent on any other software to fully function. This can only be used on Brother knitting machines that have cartridge capabilities: KH-900, KH-270, KH-965, KH-965i, KH-970, CK35.

If you have loads of diskettes with Brother format files on them, you can load them into the Super Cartridge, then plug it into your personal computer using a USB port. Then upload the files into your computer where, with the utility software, you can sort, arrange, look at the image of the stitch pattern or file the patterns. If you need to edit the pattern, you would do it in the knitting machine or PPD. Once you have converted all of your files, the Diskette Drive is no longer needed. The PPD can still be used to create patterns.
