How Much Yarn Needed for Projects
OTHER ITEMS: SCARF for Childern SCARF for Adults
This is a quick look at what it takes to make a sweater, the amount is in yards.
This page should help you decide how much yarn you would need to buy for certain projects, including by yarn weight and garment size. If you are using Art or Novelty Yarn, yarn without a smooth finish to it such as ladder yarn, paper yarn, frilly yarn, twisted yarn, yarn with stuff hanging off it or embellished in some way, it usually does not do well on a knitting machine and drops stitches, breaks or catches. You should always move the carriage much more slowly when using this type of yarn. Some yarn can work but it will be a difficult project so be patient. You can add these yarns as embellishments by hand on the cuffs, edges or hand knit a collar out of it, that is what I do. Try it on the machine before you dedicate your project to the special and usually very beautiful yarn and decide then how to integrate it into your garment. You can always weave it in.
There is also a pamphlet that I wrote up that teaches you how to figure out hoe much yarn you need for your project, and yes there is math involved. You can download it in the "Download Section" or use this link: How Much Yarn Math
There are also a ton of knitting calculators and pattern generators for your use in the "Knitting Calculators" page that figure out rows, increases, decreases and more. There is a download on how to figure out much yarn you need for a sweater in the download section.
Here is a yarn calculator: http://www.creativeknittingmagazine.com/yarn_calculator.php
